If you don’t have more refills for your regular medications, and it is not easy for you to reach out to your doctor and get a new Rx, the pharmacist may be able to help. Your Pharmacist can assess your medication needs and renew your prescriptions (if appropriate). You can ask for Rx renewal over the phone.

Before the pharmacist decides to renew your Rx, He/She might need to perform:

  1. An Assessment
    • Your Pharmacist may ask you some related questions and review your medication profile to determine if your medication is working for you and whether it is appropriate to renew your prescription
    • The pharmacist determines that the therapy is safe and effective by considering the risks and benefits and other relevant individual circumstances of the patient
    • The pharmacist will make sure that you do not have any side effects from the medication, and your lab results and monitoring allow for Rx renewal
  2. A Prescription Renewal
    • Your Pharmacist can renew your prescription to help ensure you don’t miss a dose.
    • Based on the assessment, your Pharmacist will prescribe an appropriate medication quantity.
    • The Pharmacist’s name will appear on your medication label as the Prescriber.
    • A pharmacist will notify the primary care provider or prescriber within a reasonable time after renewing a prescription.

Note: Pharmacists may recommend a visit with your Primary Care Provider for assessment of your condition to obtain subsequent prescription refills.
